Few days back we have announced the release of Android 2.2 codenamed Froyo which was announced only for Google phones yet. The only source to update phones (rather than Google) is to wait for the manufacturers to put out the Android 2.2 update for other models too, the user cannot do themselves or will end up with some disaster.
However Android 2.2 can be updated to other smartphones as a sharp developer from XDA Forum have successfully made. I should mention that it is not in complete working condition as it is still in beta phase. Nexus One users should assume themselves to be one of the luckiest persons getting 2.2 updates, and we already had covered and article explaining the manual update to Froyo.
A senior developer from XDA Forum Zenulator have successfully ported Android 2.2 to HTC Hero smartphone. He further added that not all the functionality are in working condition, you may not able to access some of the features.
