Image: Nokia 112

Both devices are perfect for communicating across Facebook, Twitter and social media networks. The internet experience is also smooth thanks to the Nokia Browser. This innovative technology allows users to consume less data by up to 90%, by compressing websites in the cloud. Both devices offer direct access to Facebook and Twitter from their home screens. The Nokia 112 also features preloaded eBuddy instant messaging service right out of the box, so users can use popular chat services to keep conversations going 24/7.

In common with other Nokia mobile phones, consumers can choose from thousands of apps to download on the Nokia Store. With the upgraded camera, they can now customize their contacts with pictures and share them with friends via social networks and Bluetooth.

“Today’s mobile phone users want a quick internet experience that allows them to discover great content and share it with their friends – but without being held back by high data costs.” said Mary T. McDowell, Nokia’s Executive Vice President, Mobile Phones, Nokia “The new Nokia 110 and Nokia 112 devices combine browsing, social media, apps, world-class entertainment and long battery life to create a great package for young, urban consumers who want to do it all.” Commenting of the consumer habits in Pakistan, Imran Mahmood, Vice President, Near East, Nokia said, “Our vision is to give the youth of Pakistan their first internet experience on a Nokia mobile device. And we are very pleased to have made great progress in this direction with our rich, affordable and power packed portfolio”

Consumers will be able to easily access the content by clicking on the Games Gift EA icon on their home screen which will take them to the Nokia Store to download the games. Once they have accessed the offering, they will have 60 days to download the games of their choice, keeping the games forever.

Both new phones offer an improved VGA camera for sharp and clear pictures with support for up to 32GB of external memory, enough for more than 6000+ songs or 90,000 pictures. Consumers can tune into their favorite radio stations and share their favorite songs with friends over Bluetooth. The phones have been optimized to provide a long-lasting battery life, with over 10 hours of talk time and nearly a month’s standby, meaning that consumers can stay in-touch and entertained all day long.

Dual SIM capability

The Nokia 110 and Nokia 112 are both Dual SIM phones, featuring the benefits of Nokia’s unique and industry leading Easy Swap technology. The Easy Swap technology can personalize and remember up to five different SIM cards, giving consumers full control over their costs.

The Nokia 110 will also be available as single SIM versions – Nokia 111 and Nokia 113, with this last one available in Europe and Eurasia only.

With a vision to cater to the lower segment of the market, Nokia Pakistan and djuice have joined hands to start a series of Developer Workshops that aim to provide training focused on S40 devices. The workshop was recently held at Telenor’s Regional Head Office, Islamabad and included developers from SEECS, NUST University as well as some SMEs. Faisal Iqbal, Mobile Specialist at Orison Technologies imparted training to the participants and shared the details of development tools available for game development with QML.

Talking about the partnership, Faisal Riaz, Applications & Devices Specialist, djuice said,

“djuice partnered with Nokia to give a chance to amateur app developers to improve their skill set and perhaps do more with it than they can right now. During training, we received a great response from the developers and being one of the leading telecom service providers in Pakistan, we feel it is our responsibility to support initiatives that promise industry-wide growth. We hope to enter into new mutually beneficial partnerships in future with Nokia as well and contribute to better services for end consumers.”

Expressing her views, Rabia Nizami, Business Development Manager EDX, Nokia Pakistan & Afghanistan said,

“I appreciate the interest level of Islamabad’s developer community to learn and excel in their chosen field. Nokia has been organizing these kinds of workshops for developers in Pakistan for the past 2 years. As part of Nokia partnership with djuice to build the local Ecosystem and provide new opportunities to the local developers, this time around Nokia offered a Training Workshop in Islamabad partnered with djuice and P@SHA for Game development with QML. The workshop was geared towards channelizing the strengths of local developers and providing them resources to develop more locally relevant mobile apps for Nokia Smart Devices in our country.”

At the workshop’s conclusion, certificates were distributed among all the participating developers. Events of this nature are pertinent to take the local IT/Telecom industry to the next level and enable better mobility experience for end consumers especially in countries like Pakistan where majority of people use S40 mobile phones.

The day i bought Nokia N9 and showed to my friends, the very first thing they said was this is Nokia Lumia 800 and i was just surprised as we don’t have Lumia editions here in our local market. A little researched on Google made me clear that Nokia introduced this device with Nokia N9 name tag (this was for Middle East/Asia Pacific) and in European and US markets it was named as Nokia Lumia 800.

Well a basic difference between N9 & Lumia 800 is N9 comes on MeeGo operating system where as Lumia is on Windows 7.5 a.k.a Mango. Here is a quick review to a brilliant device which i have got hand’s on experience.

Nokia N9 Specifications:

The official nokia n9 press release from Nokia Pakistan confirms the features as listed below:

A MeeGo Operating System,
A 3.9" AMOLED touchscreen,
8 Megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics
16/64 GB built-in memory
Dolby Digital Plus decoding
Dolby Headphone
Availabe Colors: Black, Cyan & Magenta
Free GPS application included (Drive app)

Nokia N9 : Design

Nokia N9 is a beautiful awesome looking phone with sleek and stylish design, however its much like its predecessor the Nokia N8 (check iTechGiz Nokia N8 previous post here). However the design was some how very much like the previous model but you cannot say it is complete from the previous design as N8 comes with a home screen button and QWERTY keyboard underneath the screen, whereas N9 is a complete button-less phone on main screen.

Nokia N9 : Software

Also called the successor to Nokia N900, N9 runs on MeeGo 1.2 Harmattaan and it the very first phone of its kind manufactured by Nokia carrying MeeGo OS. It was no doubt a promising open-source OS available (as N900 carries MeeGo 5) but the growing technology and OS competition will radically put it aside or it would have to be so powerful to climb up the competition.

Nokia N9 is undeniably comes with excellent software that consumes its hardware efficiently. The 1GHz Cortex A8, TI OMAP 3630 chipset processor runs like a fluid even on multiple applications running. This is a single core processor which truly supports multi-tasking capabilities.

Nokia N9 : Design

Nokia Lumia 800 borrowed the design of Nokia N9 with slight changes that too minimal to accept. The most inspiring this was the concept of no button on screen surprised me when i hold the phone and was just wondering how could we go back to home screen. Here is the introduction of new feature called Nokia Swipe, It just like swiping your finger end to end on screen and your would be directed towards home screen. Nokia N9 comes with only 3 hardware button i.e. Volume up, volume down and power button all placed on right hand side of the phone.

Nokia N9 : Features

The absence of physical button on Nokia N9 did ‘not cost any problem to me all it require a SWIPE on the phone to navigate between home screen, apps and task manager. In-order to exit an app you need to swipe your finger edge to edge and it will bring you to the home screen. In order to wake up your device from lock mode is to double tap on display screen, well you need to remember some tricks when using the device.

Other than swipe, Nokia N9 also comes with NFC (Near Field Communication) technology, which is indeed a future technology for pairing devices. With just "bump" or "touch" of two devices, certain action could be performed such as sharing of photo’s, songs broadcasting songs to NFC-enable speakers or even transacting payments, playing multi-player games and many many more. I assume N9 is proud to endowed with this amazing feature.

Nokia N9 : Camera

The camera is quite impressive as it take beautiful pictures showing good color reproduction, fast focus and simple shooting mechanism works well. However i noticed that under low light condition the camera does not perform that well as expected, but this issue came out when i compared the result with my normal camera else it is unnoticeable. Off course the camera is not a DSLR rather its the top echelon of smartphone cameras.

Nokia N9 : Battery

Nokia N9 battery life is decent as most smartphones unless you use to its extremes, however if you use your phone as internet hotspot functionality the battery would be drained out within a day, otherwise it managed a couple of days with prompting a low battery notification.

Nokia N9 : Pricing

Nokia N9 is available in Pakistan market with a price tag of Rs.49,900.

Conclusion:

My complete experience with Nokia N9 on MeeGo 1.2 operating system was most continent and fascinating. If your wants are just limited and you’re after and excellent looking phone, N9 would be a fair deal, although Nokia’s going to have a head to head battle with most convincing mass market to buy N9 rather than consumer friendly iPhone 4S. In short, the best phone with a very limited future.

Nokia 808 Pureview

I repeat FOURTY ONE Mega pixel built-in camera phone from Nokia just went surprised when i just heard. The 41 MP camera drives pixel over-sampling technology combining the its power with Carl Zeiss Optics is able to capture images with best results as we can tell you this from sample pictures we have seen until now.

On the other hand you can use it as as "Creative Shooting Mode" to capture images up to 38 mega-pixel of resolution later on re-frame, crop and to zoom in to grab the best picture with in a picture. The camera converts your image to suitable sizes for sharing and storing purposes.

Nokia 808 : Video Recording

The Purview technology also extends to video’s user can record videos at 1080p at 30fps with 4X lossless zooming, all the credit goes to the giant sensor and powerful image processing which is capable of handling over 1 billion pixels per second. However if you lower down the video quality to 720p you can increase zoom up to 6X or 12X lossless in HD i.e. (640 x 360).

The new Nokia 808 PureView has set a new standards in a life of smartphones and brilliant camera. The Nokia 808 is said to be the first ever video recording phone to allow recording without distortion at audio levels beyond the capability of human hearing, which means you can capture CD-like audio quality no matter in what harshest environment you are in.

Nokia & Djuice Pakistan jointly conducted a developer Workshop at NED University Of Engineering & Technology with an aim to instill mobile app skills in the Computer engineering students.

With a vision to cater to students with a knack for mobile app development at a university level, Nokia Pakistan and djuice conducted a Developer Workshop at NED University which focused on imparting training to students on S40 devices. It was for the first time that Nokia Pakistan conducted a developer workshop solely for students at a university. The venue for the workshop was Computer and Information Systems Engineering Department where the trainer Syed Faraz Ahmed from Lakson Business Solutions shared details of the development tools available to develop mobile apps for S40 devices and gave hands-on training to participants.

Expressing her views, Rabia Azfar Nizami, Business Development Manager EDX, Near East, NOKIA said,

“I appreciate the interest level of NED University’s students to learn and excel in their chosen field. Nokia has been organizing these kinds of workshops for developers in Pakistan for the past 1 year and it is for the first time that it was being solely organized for students. Nokia partnered with djuice and P@SHA to offer training for S40 platform and the workshop was geared towards channelizing the strengths of these students and providing them a rich bundle of resources to develop more locally relevant mobile apps for S40 devices which are most popular among the masses in our country.”

At the workshop’s conclusion, certificates were distributed among all the participating students. Ms. Nida Siddiqui was awarded a Nokia Asha 200 for her excellent performance in the workshop while Mr. YasirTahir and Mr. Shayan Rais, both were awarded a djuice connection & internet bundle by Ammar Waheed, Assistant Manager Content, Product Development, djuice. Events of this nature are pertinent to take the local IT/Telecom industry to the next level and enable better mobility experience for end consumers especially in countries like Pakistan where majority of people use S40 mobile phones.

“I am pleased with being assigned the task to manage one of the biggest Brands in Pakistan. I’m certain that with the support of my team we will achieve some great new milestones. Nokia is the most loved brand in Pakistan and we will continue to meet and exceed expectations of Pakistani consumers. Our contribution to the industry growth and environmental initiatives in the Country will continue while we do our business of CONNECTING PEOPLE”.

Arif started his career in 1991 from Paktel Limited in the field of Direct Sales which proved to be a stepping stone in his career. Paktel being the leading telecom company of its time in Pakistan gave Arif an adequate level of exposure to Pakistan’s Telecom Industry and helped him learn what drives it. He later worked at senior positions with a number of leading organizations such as Mobil Askari Lubricants and APL – a global transportation and logistics company in shipping and eventually joined Nokia Pakistan in 2007.

Nokia recently hosted an exclusive preview of the Nokia N9, built for people who appreciate a stunning blend of design and the latest smartphone technology. The event was held at a local hotel and gathered top-notch technology enthusiasts from across Pakistan.

The Design

The Nokia N9 introduces an innovative new design where the home key is replaced by a simple gesture: a swipe. Whenever you’re in an application, swiping from the edge of the display takes you home. The three home views of the user interface are designed to give fast access to the most important things people do with a phone: using apps, staying up to date with notifications and social networks, and switching between activities.

The industrial design of the Nokia N9 is an example of extreme product making and craft. The body is precision-machined from a single piece of polycarbonate and flows seamlessly into beautiful curved glass. The laminated deep black display means that the user interface just floats on the surface of the product.

"With the Nokia N9, we wanted to design a better way to use a phone. To do this we innovated in the design of the hardware and software together. We reinvented the home key with a simple gesture: a swipe from the edge of the screen. The experience sets a new bar for how natural technology can feel," said Henri Mattila, Solution Marketing Manager, Middle East & Africa (MEA), Nokia. "And this is just the beginning. The details that make the Nokia N9 unique – the industrial design, the all-screen user experience, and the expressive Qt framework for developers – will evolve in future Nokia products."

The Technology

The Nokia N9 also packs the latest in camera, navigation and audio technology for a great all-round experience. With no need for a home key, the all-screen Nokia N9 makes more room for apps to shine. The 3.9-inch AMOLED screen is made from scratch-resistant curved glass. The polycarbonate body enables superior antenna performance. This means better reception, better voice quality and fewer dropped calls.

Fitted with the latest in wireless technology, Near Field Communication (NFC), the Nokia N9 allows you to easily share images and videos between devices by touching them together. Pair it with Bluetooth accessories like the new NFC-enabled Nokia Play 360° wireless music speaker only once, and you get a great surround sound music experience with just a tap.

The Camera

The 8-megapixel Carl Zeiss autofocus sensor, wide-angle lens, HD-quality video capture and large lens aperture enable great camera performance even in low lighting conditions. This makes the Nokia N9 one of the best camera-phones ever produced.

Built-in Maps

The Nokia N9 features free turn-by-turn drive and walk navigation with voice guidance in Maps. With the new dedicated Drive app, you can get in the car and start navigating to your destination right away when travelling abroad.

You can watch videos in true 16:9 widescreen format. And because the Nokia N9 is also the world’s first smartphone with Dolby Digital Plus decoding and Dolby Headphone post-processing technology, you get a surround sound experience with any set of headphones.

Price & Availability

The Nokia N9 is available in three colors – black, cyan, and magenta and a newly pure white color, with storage options to accommodate plenty of content: 16GB and 64GB. The Nokia N9 is available with Nokia distributors across Pakistan for a price tag of Rs.52,000/-

Nokia Care Protect, extended warranty offer was launched today, adding to consumer convenience, Nokia Care Protect is an extended warranty that can be purchased for nominal charges and offers mobile phone warranty service for additional 12-months after the original Nokia warranty expires.

Based on the research, average phone life for a consumer in Pakistan ranges from eighteen months to twenty four months. The first 12 months are covered by original warranty but after the expiry of the warranty the consumers did not had an option for warranty claims.

With Nokia Care Protect is an add-on service from Nokia to offer its customers peace of mind and give them the freedom to make the most of their mobile device. There is no hidden or additional fee involved – with a single, upfront fee, consumers can avail all their mobile phone support and repair needs for another 12 more months after the expiry of the original warranty. Nokia customers have to simply select the plan to match their Nokia mobile device:

There are three easy ways to receive support: online, in-person at any Nokia Care Centre or by phone. Nokia Care Protect gives easy access to Nokia device experts who are available to guide consumers through all their queries and repair needs.

Speaking about the launch of Nokia Care Protect in Pakistan, Reza Burney, Country Care Manager, Nokia Pakistan & Afghanistan said,
