The world of home security systems has changed dramatically in the past 10 years. The advent of WiFi technology meant that low-cost, no-hassle home security systems could be sold on the shelves and installed by just about anyone.

In the past five years, that change has accelerated even faster. Embedded technology is transforming the home security system from a simple way to identify and prevent intruders into a whole-home management system. Right there at the center of all of this is the smartphone.

You can use a smartphone to manage any number of home security functions. Some apps are web-based, while some are designed for specific operating systems like iOS, Android, or Blackberry. Usually, you’re going to have to pay a monthly fee to your home security system in order to get mobile access, but in many cases it proves to be more than worth it.

Let’s take a look at some of the major functions today’s home alarm systems can do with smartphone apps:

Activate or deactivate your alarm system. There are a number of scenarios in which this could be especially useful. For example, if you forget to arm your alarm in the morning after you leave for work, you can simply log in from your smartphone once you get to the office and turn it on.

Control locks. Some apps will even let you interface with your door locks. Obviously these require special equipment, but the concept is tremendously useful. Forget your keys? No problem. Pull out your smartphone and unlock the door. Have a cousin visiting from out of town and she arrives while you’re at work? Unlock the door remotely so she can get in long before you’re done at work.

View active alarms. One of the most obvious functions of a smartphone app for your home security system is to tell you if any alarms have been tripped. Many of the functions of your security app require a data connection, but this one will usually run via SMS.

View home security cameras. Not all security camera systems have this capability. In some cases, you might decide to install standalone IP cameras that then communicate with a server on your computer. There are many apps for this kind of scenario, including Active WebCam, Zone Minder, and Ugolog. Best of all, these apps aren’t proprietary; they work with just about any IP-based camera.

In some ways, that’s the sticking point for certain apps. The app you use for your home alarm system is proprietary. It’s designed to work with a specific system. Most of the major vendors have their own app, with several vendors using a re-branded Alarm.com app as resellers for their security systems.

Picture the scene. It’s 2010. Samsung’s new Galaxy S has proven to be flashy but full of bugs, and the iPhone 4 has decided that it doesn’t like left-handed people. Out of the shadows, a new(ish) firm unleashes a sleek sexy new smartphone that took the best bits from both competitors, whilst working perfectly and not discriminating against southpaws. The Desire was absolutely huge. How, then, can HTC’s latest model compete with the current market? The HTC One X. Will it get the job done?

The first undoubted plus of the One X is the power that eminates from the processing. With the first quad-core processor to be included in a smartphone, the One X operates with a true smoothness that really can’t be matched by anything outside of the tablet market. Whether you’re viewing the latest YouTube videos or reading up on your e-books, there is a fluidity in operation here that really can’t be matched.

Image: Laptopmag

Secondly, the new integration of Beats technology is almost illegally exciting. With doctor Dre’s headphones to be found on every third head in the UK and the US, the inclusion of a pair with every One X is a seriously big deal. What’s even cooler is the integration of the technology, meaning that with the press of a button, the sound going through the headphones is instantly improved tenfold. It’s a superb feature, and one that will make the One X an instant favorite amongst audiophiles.

The screen is also excellent: quite possibly the finest one we’ve seen on a mobile device thus far in terms of clarity and life-like display. At 4.7 inches, it’s a whopper in terms of mobile screens, using a 720p display in order to make it’s presence felt. Whilst it doesn’t quite have the same beautiful color display of the AMOLED screens that are favored by Samsung, its clarity is well worth the slight sacrifice.

Are there flaws? Well, yes, there are. Firstly, the lack of removable storage (what I like to call ‘the Apple sin’) is a real bugbear. Essentially, this leaves you completely stuck with what you’ve got, and rules out the smaller HD models for anyone who likes to keep movies and music on their phones. Bad show indeed.

Overall, though, it seems hard to argue with the HTC One X. As long as you’re able to get around it’s fairly substantial bulk (that screen size comes at a cost), it’s a superb, sleek and easy-to-use piece of technology. Good work.

There is no doubt that iPhone is the first mover in operating system and also in helping touch smart phone to manufacture at mass production level. This meant, Google that created Android on the very much same design and functions as the iOS with the Open Set Alliance was a direct assault at the iOS. Being open source and made by wide variety of mobile phone manufacturers, iPhone was confronted with a multitude of companies with the same OS.

What many people didn’t know was that Steve Jobs hated Android and held a strong belief that it was plagiarized from their iOS. He was angry, frustrated and wanted to lay waste Android for what it was. He told his autobiographer that android was a grand theft and he was willing to go to any length to fight this war. He threatened the creators of android saying he would not leave this matter alone.

iPhone Vs Samsung

Apple Inc that has a business worth 8 billion dollars with Samsung on components sued the company over potential theft of design and copying the iPad designs. Samsung is not only one of the leading electronics manufacturers but also has Android OS in their tablets and cellular phones. One reason why tablets and Samsung phones have been able to capture market is not only the less cost relative to that offered by Apple Inc but also the OS. Many people now prefer to use Android and not iOS. This means the iOS which was meant to be the only one in the market faced stiff competition and also had to share the market with android based electronics which many companies like Samsung were making.

War of Attrition

Even though Apple Inc has sued both Samsung and Motorola companies for the usage of Android it may be as vulnerable to damages as these two companies. Since the days of Steve Jobs when the litigation against other companies accused of stealing or duplicating Apple Inc technology, the company has also lost many rounds. The reason it has become a war of attrition is that all companies involved in the legal battle may have to pay damages if the court rules in favor of any one of them. That is to say Apple may have to face remaking or paying for its technology that it has fundamentally said was copied.

The Fight Continues

Even if these companies do come together after a settlement, the battle between Google Android and iOS of Apple is likely to go on forever. They both will be in the race to get market shares in both the tablet and smartphone platforms. Android being supplied freely and being open source has a tremendous advantage that it is used by many of the major electronics manufacturers and it can easily take the market share. Also the fact that Android has more apps on its free category in the Google play, the alternative to the app market, it poses great threat to the iPhone sales.

The day i bought Nokia N9 and showed to my friends, the very first thing they said was this is Nokia Lumia 800 and i was just surprised as we don’t have Lumia editions here in our local market. A little researched on Google made me clear that Nokia introduced this device with Nokia N9 name tag (this was for Middle East/Asia Pacific) and in European and US markets it was named as Nokia Lumia 800.

Well a basic difference between N9 & Lumia 800 is N9 comes on MeeGo operating system where as Lumia is on Windows 7.5 a.k.a Mango. Here is a quick review to a brilliant device which i have got hand’s on experience.

Nokia N9 : Design

Nokia N9 is a beautiful awesome looking phone with sleek and stylish design, however its much like its predecessor the Nokia N8 (check iTechGiz Nokia N8 previous post here). However the design was some how very much like the previous model but you cannot say it is complete from the previous design as N8 comes with a home screen button and QWERTY keyboard underneath the screen, whereas N9 is a complete button-less phone on main screen.

Nokia N9 : Software

Also called the successor to Nokia N900, N9 runs on MeeGo 1.2 Harmattaan and it the very first phone of its kind manufactured by Nokia carrying MeeGo OS. It was no doubt a promising open-source OS available (as N900 carries MeeGo 5) but the growing technology and OS competition will radically put it aside or it would have to be so powerful to climb up the competition.

Nokia N9 is undeniably comes with excellent software that consumes its hardware efficiently. The 1GHz Cortex A8, TI OMAP 3630 chipset processor runs like a fluid even on multiple applications running. This is a single core processor which truly supports multi-tasking capabilities.

Nokia N9 : Design

Nokia Lumia 800 borrowed the design of Nokia N9 with slight changes that too minimal to accept. The most inspiring this was the concept of no button on screen surprised me when i hold the phone and was just wondering how could we go back to home screen. Here is the introduction of new feature called Nokia Swipe, It just like swiping your finger end to end on screen and your would be directed towards home screen. Nokia N9 comes with only 3 hardware button i.e. Volume up, volume down and power button all placed on right hand side of the phone.

Nokia N9 : Features

The absence of physical button on Nokia N9 did ‘not cost any problem to me all it require a SWIPE on the phone to navigate between home screen, apps and task manager. In-order to exit an app you need to swipe your finger edge to edge and it will bring you to the home screen. In order to wake up your device from lock mode is to double tap on display screen, well you need to remember some tricks when using the device.

Other than swipe, Nokia N9 also comes with NFC (Near Field Communication) technology, which is indeed a future technology for pairing devices. With just "bump" or "touch" of two devices, certain action could be performed such as sharing of photo’s, songs broadcasting songs to NFC-enable speakers or even transacting payments, playing multi-player games and many many more. I assume N9 is proud to endowed with this amazing feature.

Nokia N9 : Camera

The camera is quite impressive as it take beautiful pictures showing good color reproduction, fast focus and simple shooting mechanism works well. However i noticed that under low light condition the camera does not perform that well as expected, but this issue came out when i compared the result with my normal camera else it is unnoticeable. Off course the camera is not a DSLR rather its the top echelon of smartphone cameras.

Nokia N9 : Battery

Nokia N9 battery life is decent as most smartphones unless you use to its extremes, however if you use your phone as internet hotspot functionality the battery would be drained out within a day, otherwise it managed a couple of days with prompting a low battery notification.

Nokia N9 : Pricing

Nokia N9 is available in Pakistan market with a price tag of Rs.49,900.

Conclusion:

My complete experience with Nokia N9 on MeeGo 1.2 operating system was most continent and fascinating. If your wants are just limited and you’re after and excellent looking phone, N9 would be a fair deal, although Nokia’s going to have a head to head battle with most convincing mass market to buy N9 rather than consumer friendly iPhone 4S. In short, the best phone with a very limited future.

The iOS, Android are the most common operating system and though it feels everyone is mad over these device no matter there even don’t know what Android is, looks funny Well you people were thinking what about Symbian, Is it dead or so? Think again, As this happens in Mobile World Congress in Barcelona Nokia announced it most surprising 808 flagship Symbian device with remarkable 41 Mega-pixel camera.

Nokia 808 Pureview

I repeat FOURTY ONE Mega pixel built-in camera phone from Nokia just went surprised when i just heard. The 41 MP camera drives pixel over-sampling technology combining the its power with Carl Zeiss Optics is able to capture images with best results as we can tell you this from sample pictures we have seen until now.

On the other hand you can use it as as "Creative Shooting Mode" to capture images up to 38 mega-pixel of resolution later on re-frame, crop and to zoom in to grab the best picture with in a picture. The camera converts your image to suitable sizes for sharing and storing purposes.

Nokia 808 : Video Recording

The Purview technology also extends to video’s user can record videos at 1080p at 30fps with 4X lossless zooming, all the credit goes to the giant sensor and powerful image processing which is capable of handling over 1 billion pixels per second. However if you lower down the video quality to 720p you can increase zoom up to 6X or 12X lossless in HD i.e. (640 x 360).

The new Nokia 808 PureView has set a new standards in a life of smartphones and brilliant camera. The Nokia 808 is said to be the first ever video recording phone to allow recording without distortion at audio levels beyond the capability of human hearing, which means you can capture CD-like audio quality no matter in what harshest environment you are in.

Nokia & Djuice Pakistan jointly conducted a developer Workshop at NED University Of Engineering & Technology with an aim to instill mobile app skills in the Computer engineering students.

With a vision to cater to students with a knack for mobile app development at a university level, Nokia Pakistan and djuice conducted a Developer Workshop at NED University which focused on imparting training to students on S40 devices. It was for the first time that Nokia Pakistan conducted a developer workshop solely for students at a university. The venue for the workshop was Computer and Information Systems Engineering Department where the trainer Syed Faraz Ahmed from Lakson Business Solutions shared details of the development tools available to develop mobile apps for S40 devices and gave hands-on training to participants.

Expressing her views, Rabia Azfar Nizami, Business Development Manager EDX, Near East, NOKIA said,

“I appreciate the interest level of NED University’s students to learn and excel in their chosen field. Nokia has been organizing these kinds of workshops for developers in Pakistan for the past 1 year and it is for the first time that it was being solely organized for students. Nokia partnered with djuice and P@SHA to offer training for S40 platform and the workshop was geared towards channelizing the strengths of these students and providing them a rich bundle of resources to develop more locally relevant mobile apps for S40 devices which are most popular among the masses in our country.”

At the workshop’s conclusion, certificates were distributed among all the participating students. Ms. Nida Siddiqui was awarded a Nokia Asha 200 for her excellent performance in the workshop while Mr. YasirTahir and Mr. Shayan Rais, both were awarded a djuice connection & internet bundle by Ammar Waheed, Assistant Manager Content, Product Development, djuice. Events of this nature are pertinent to take the local IT/Telecom industry to the next level and enable better mobility experience for end consumers especially in countries like Pakistan where majority of people use S40 mobile phones.
